Summary

《南漂安南記事》 is a diary of a Japanese fisherman who working in fishing boat that shipwrecked and was drifted to Annam in the eighteenth century. The story is about the Japanese fishing boat 大乘丸(Daijo Maru), which departed from Sendai carrying tribute rice to Edo on August 23, 1794. They encountered a maritime disaster, drifting at sea for several months, and finally being rescued in Annam.

There are 16 persons, including the captain and 15 crew members; 5 died in Annam. The other survivors got the assistance of the King of Annam, Nguyen Phuc Anh at Saigon. They were transferred to Macau and Guangdong, via Jiangxi and Zhejiang returned to Nagasaki.

This is a true story from two hundred years ago. We can follow the way of the castaways to understand the culture of Annam, historical events, and the rule of castaways transported between Annam, China, and Japan.
