堤岸自由太平洋英文書院小史---the history of Cholon free Pacific English School”


1957年建立的堤岸自由太平洋英文書院

        1957年秋,于斌樞機主教在西貢發起創辦《自由太平洋協會》,並且成立自由太平洋通訊社,發行越華日報,出版自由太平洋月刊……等。為了栽培越華英語人才,在西貢開創《自由太平洋英文書院》,以推展英文教育,由於求學者眾,使書院又增開夜校。1959年春,在阮智芳街建立《自由太平洋高級中學》推廣中文教育。1963年為了記念雷鳴遠的公績,更名為「鳴遠高級中學」。1964年4月23日,自由太平洋協會將自由太平洋英文書院及中學,交由中國天主教耀漢會主辦,書院乃更名為《耀漢英文高級中學》。直迄1965年因越戰爆發,西貢治安異常紊亂,夜校因而停辦。迄1975年4月三31日,兩校高中初中學生數達六千餘名,教師職員工兩百四十位,每屆畢業生近千名,二十年間畢業生逾萬名,為全越華校之最高學府。

        1975年之後,很多的畢業生移民世界各國,1983年,由南加州一群熱愛母校的前越南堤岸自由太平洋耀漢英文書院及鳴遠高級中學兩所學校的熱心校友,發起並成立「美國自由太平洋耀漢鳴遠校友會」。2001年,鑑於全球校友為數頗眾,各地亦有地區性之校友會組織,遂組成了聯合全球校友會之《世界自由太平洋耀漢鳴遠校友會聯合會》。


The history of  “Cholon free Pacific English School” 

         In autumn 1957, Cardinal Paul Yü Pin (于斌; April 13, 1901–August 16, 1978) who was a Chinese Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church, he launched "Free Pacific Institute " (自由太平洋協會) in Saigon. The Institute establishment of “Free Pacific News Agency“ for issuing the Vietnam Chinese Daily and published “Pacific Free Press magazine“...... etc. Besides, also established a "Free Pacific English School" for improving the English education for Chinese in Saigon. Since many people wonder go to school and soon after they opened the night School. In spring 1959, "Free Pacific high school"(自由太平洋高級中學) was established on Ngung Chi Foung street. In 1963, the school was renamed to “MING-YUAN high school”(鳴遠高級中學) to memory the Father Frédéric-Vincent Lebbe (雷鳴遠, Re Ming Yuan). 

        In 1964, the board meeting of both "freed Pacific Association" and high school from "Free Pacific Association" was changed to “ the Little Brothers of St. John the Baptist”, then the school was renamed again to”ST. JOHN English high school“ (耀漢英文高級中學). In 1965, during the Vietnam War was occurring, the security exception disorder and the night school was closed. 

         After 1975, many graduates moved to other countries, they set up a FREE PACIFIC ST. JOHN MING-YUAN ALUMNI ASSOCIATION USA (美國自由太平洋耀漢鳴遠校友會) in California in 1983. In 2001, the member from all over the world, and renamed to THE WORLD FEDERATION OF FREE PACIFIC ST. JOHN MING-YUAN ALUMNI ASSOCIATION(世界自由太平洋耀漢鳴遠校友會聯合會)

Father Frédéric-Vincent Lebbe (雷鳴遠)
         Father Frédéric-Vincent Lebbe (雷鳴遠) (1877-1940) was born in Belgium, and he was a Roman Catholic missionary to China, whose advocacy led the pope to appoint the first native Chinese bishops. In 1927, he became a Chinese citizen. He organized relief teams to assist the Chinese against the Japanese in the war, and he saved the civilian population throughout China. He established two Chinese religious orders, the Little Brothers of St. John the Baptist (Les Petits frères de Saint-Jean-Baptiste, 耀漢小兄弟會) and the Little Sisters of St. Theresa of the Holy Child (Les Petites soeurs de Sainte-Thérèse-de-l'Enfant-Jésus, 德來小姊妹會, named for Saint Thérèse of Lisieux) in China. Later, many schools and institutions bear his name, and he received official praise from the ROC government after his death, including a memorial tablet at the National Revolutionary Martyrs' Shrine in Taipei.
